Occupy’s Feminist General Assembly Focuses on Racial Justice
FemGA to be held August 18, 2-4 PM, at Harlem Meer
Committed to racial justice as intrinsic to the struggles for gender and economic equality, Women Occupying Wall Street (WOWs) is convening a Feminist General Assembly Saturday, August 18, with a focus on issues of acute importance to people of color and their communities. The assembly—from 2 to 4 PM at the Harlem Meer in Central Park at 110th Street and Malcolm X Blvd—is the fourth monthly “FemGA” since May.
Among the topics on the agenda are the living wage, domestic work, immigration, the educational system, reproductive rights, incarceration, and queer issues—all of which have been brought up by participants of previous FemGAs as areas that require immediate attention.
The FemGA’s commitment to focus on the struggles of POC is best explained by organizer and proud Latina feminist, Dior Vargas: “We need to acknowledge that the racial split within the Occupy Movement is directly related to the world at large. We are all fighting for the same thing! Why isn’t more of my community coming to the FemGAs? We are hoping to work together to build something that is extremely pertinent to Feminism and POC.”
The Feminist GA was conceived as a working group of Occupy Wall Street to build solidarity among feminists and their allies of all genders in New York City—bringing together groups and individuals from diverse communities to forge friendships and comradeship, learn from each other, work through conflicts, and plan joint actions.

My submission for the POC #FemGA
I’M A PROUD LATINA FEMINIST!!!
Here’s Dior Vargas, a native New Yorker who grew up right across from Harlem Meer! Having this FemGA in her neighborhood means so much to her. You can definitely tell she’s a feminist by the FP poster on the back :)
